I am not resurrecting ether, I am stating that there is no vacuum between particles, we are all "swimming" in ever decreasing sized matter, whatever it may be. Let me add, the substance of space has nothing to do with light and everything to do with it. The fact that we cannot detect extremely small-sized substances does not mean they do not exist. Just the same way viruses and bacteria "did not exist" in ancient Greece only because they were not detectable. The MM experiment was done in 1887...they did not know of the Higgs Boson at that time, does it mean that the HB does not exist too?
